Geological Properties and Processes

The Geological Properties and Processes Flagship is working to understand the geological properties and Earth processes that shape New Zealand. It is providing the geological data to reduce natural hazards risk, build resilience to environmental change, and to support renewable energy development.

Solid-Earth data and understanding of tectonic processes are critical to Earth Sciences NZ’s work and to national decisions regarding hazards, energy and environmental management. We will ensure geological and geophysical information is nationally consistent, digitally accessible and integrated across Earth Sciences NZ platforms.

Chief Scientist - Geological Properties and Processes: Phaedra Upton
Phaedra specialises in understanding geological processes using geodynamic modelling and integrating research across tectonics, geophysics, sedimentology, and geomorphology. She actively drives the translation of this knowledge into impactful solutions that reduce geological hazards and risk for Aotearoa NewZealand. Phaedra is recognised for her leadership in advancing multidisciplinary approaches to Earth science and fostering collaboration between research teams to address critical challenges.
