The Energy Use, Storage and Materials Flagship is helping accelerate New Zealand’s energy transition and economic growth by advancing innovative materials, critical minerals, and storage technologies.

New Zealand needs to accelerate the energy transition while ensuring the system remains secure, flexible and resilient as more variable renewable generation comes online. By advancing storage and materials technologies, critical minerals, and integrated system modelling, this flagship will help strengthen energy security, support affordable electrification, and enable the infrastructure needed for a dependable energy future.

John is an experienced science leader with 25 years of expertise in developing technologies for low-carbon energy and advanced manufacturing. His research interests include integrated energy systems, energy efficiency, energy generation, conversion and storage, green fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, minerals-to-high-value materials, and sensors for environmental assessment. He has a strong track record of working with New Zealand industry and other stakeholders to deliver practical, impact-focused solutions.
