James Palmer
Chief Executive
James joined Earth Sciences New Zealand on 2nd March 2026, from his role as Chief Executive of the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) which he had held since March 2023. He was also the chair of the Climate Change Interagency Executive Board, a member of the National Hazards Board and is co-chair of the guardians of the Aotearoa Circle.
Before becoming CE of MfE, James was Chief Executive of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. His previous roles include Deputy Secretary Sector Strategy at MfE; Director of Strategy, Systems and Science Policy at the Ministry for Primary Industries; and Director Strategy Development at the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry.
He was also a board member of both the Sustainable Seas and Deep South National Science Challenges.
Patrick Baker
Chief Finance, Legal and Property Officer
Patrick is a Chartered Accountant with senior leadership experience and expertise in financial management, strategy, property and risk. He began his career as an engineer with Ford Motor Company in the UK before moving into financial management. He served in senior country finance management positions in Europe and the Middle East before joining Ford New Zealand in 2004.
After choosing to settle permanently in New Zealand in 2012, Patrick was appointed CFO of The Network for Learning Limited, a Crown company established to deliver managed internet services to New Zealand’s schools, before joining the science sector.
Peter Benfell
Chief Science Operations Officer – Geological Systems
Peter has more than 30 years’ experience in leading science teams and commercialising R&D, in both the public and private sectors. He has established several large international research collaborations.
Peter worked at GNS Science in the 1990s – returning in 2018 and has led science and commercial operations. His previous roles include CEO of an industry training organisation and executive positions in research and engineering companies. Originally trained as a chemical and materials engineer, Peter also has postgraduate qualifications in business management.
Emma Bennett-Lawn
Chief People and Transformation Officer
Emma Bennett-Lawn is a transformation leader with over two decades leading large teams, with roles focused on change and operational excellence in regulated and asset-intensive industries.
Emma has held several executive roles in the energy industry, where she led successful culture and operational change programmes. Prior to this, Emma was Operations Manager at Fonterra’s pharmaceutical division, overseeing a complex manufacturing operation and delivering substantial improvements in business performance and talent retention. Earlier in her career, she held various HR leadership roles at Fonterra and lectured at the Western Institute of Technology.
Emma holds an MBA in International Business from Walden University (USA), and a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Political Science) and a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Industrial & Organisational Psychology from Victoria University of Wellington. She has completed executive education programmes at Wharton and MIT Sloan. Emma is also a Director of Taranaki Cricket and holds governance roles in farming and property ventures.
Warrick Johnston
Chief Digital and Technology Officer
Warrick is a senior technical and commercial leader with over twenty years’ experience in strategy, product and service development, and digital transformation. He is passionate about technology and its ability to positively impact people, science, and business, combining deep technical expertise with commercial insight and a practical, outcomes-focused approach.
Warrick has held roles focused on business growth, innovation, and emerging technologies across startups, independent software vendors, and global companies such as Microsoft and Esri in both the UK and the US. His domain expertise includes artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, geospatial systems, and enterprise IT. Originally trained as a civil engineer, with postgraduate qualifications in geology and computer science, he brings a systems-based perspective that emphasises simplicity, coherence, and real-world outcomes.
Dan Lambert
Chief Communications and Engagement Officer
Dan Lambert is an accomplished executive leader with over two decades of experience in marketing, communications, stakeholder engagement and reputation management across government, finance, infrastructure, and public services in New Zealand and the UK.
Most recently, Dan served as Director of Communications, Engagement & Partnerships at Auckland Transport, where he led a directorate of over 90 staff and delivered significant improvements in public trust, stakeholder engagement, and organisational performance. Prior to this, he held senior communications roles at Auckland Council, including GM Communications & Marketing and Head of Public Affairs. His earlier career includes leading media relations for the Royal Bank of Scotland, heading media relations at HM Treasury in the UK, and serving as Press Secretary and Senior Adviser to a Cabinet Minister in New Zealand.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and English Literature from Victoria University of Wellington.
Helen Neil
Chief Science Operations Officer – Oceans, Water and Atmosphere
Helen is an experienced senior science and operational leader passionate about the development and delivery of science services using integrated multidisciplinary expertise and advanced technologies. She has overseen science operations since 2018 drawing on experience in various leadership roles.
Helen is an experienced geologist with a PhD in Palaeoceanography and interests in seabed mapping, oceanography, and stable isotope geochemistry. Her expertise has been applied to the management and delivery of large-scale multi-disciplinary projects and research voyages associated with seabed surveys, telecommunication cables, marine infrastructure, ocean climate and exploration within the subtropical and subantarctic oceans.
Marino Tahi
Chief Māori and Pacific Partnering Officer
Marino is a strategic and culturally grounded leader with over twenty years’ experience in the science sector specialising in Māori and Pacific partnerships. Marino has led the development and execution of strategies that integrate Te Ao Māori and Pacific perspectives into scientific research and applied science services, whilst fostering high-trust relationships with Iwi/Māori and Pacific partners.
Marino ‘s strengths include strategic leadership, change management, cultural development, business growth, and building high-performing teams. His work is underpinned by a deep commitment to cultural integrity, innovation, and long-term relationship building across Aotearoa and the Pacific. Marino affiliates to the Ngai Tūhoe tribe and hails from Ruatāhuna, a small community in Te Urewera National Park in New Zealand. Marino has a conjoint BCom (Admin BCA and BA Māori) and an MBA.
Alex Thompson
Chief Science Strategy Officer
Alex has experience in research, strategy, science investment, and the science-policy interface. She has held research posts at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, the University of California at Berkeley, and Forschungzentum Jülich in Germany, and was a founding editor of Nature Geoscience.
Alex has an MSc in quantum chemistry from the University of Canterbury, a PhD in atmospheric chemistry from York University, Canada, and graduate training in science communications and psychology. Her research addressed the interface between the earth’s surface (land, cryosphere and ocean) and the atmosphere, with a focus on using advanced stable isotope analytics to understand emissions of trace and greenhouse gases and their fate and impact in the atmosphere.
Alex is an experienced executive level leader passionate about addressing the world’s biggest challenges and opportunities through science - and developing the science leadership to do so.
